Resolved Question: I do not understand the Predators’ decision to resign Pekka Rinne?
The Nashville Predators recently resigned Pekka Rinne to a two-year contract worth $6.8 million, paying him $2.8 million next season and $4 million the year after that. That makes it unlikely that Dan Ellis will be resigned in the offseason. Here are their to-date stats: Rinne: 22-12-4, 2.79 GAA, .901 save %, 3 SO Ellis: 13-11-1, 2.59 GAA, .913 save %, 1 SO Interestingly, just as Rinne’s performance was declining (.893 save percentage and a 2.96 GAA with one shutout in his last ten starts), he’s been getting more playing time and was resigned over the Olympic break. There’s also not much of an age difference: Rinne is 27 and Ellis is 29. So two questions: 1. Why did the Nashville Predators resign him over Ellis when it does not make sense on the basis of merits? 2. Is Rinne’s new contract overpaying him? I also might have some bias against Rinne: in one of the games I went to, he was pulled after giving up three first-period goals.
