Conroy ends drought, Flames beat Kings (AP)

Fan favorite Craig Conroy earned a standing ovation for his first goal of the season for the Calgary Flames. Conroy broke a second-period tie with his timely goal, and Miikka Kiprusoff made 23 saves for his 20th victory of the season in the Flames' 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night.

The Boston Bruins heated up in a hurry for the outdoor Winter Classic. Byron Bitz began a three-goal surge in the first 17 minutes and the Bruins beat the Atlanta Thrashers 4-0 on Wednesday, gaining momentum for the game Friday at Fenway Park against the Philadelphia Flyers. “Everyone was on board right from the beginning, really focused,” captain Zdeno Chara said.

Joe Thornton had an unusual decision to make when he prepared for his penalty shot in the third period. Having watched teammate Ryane Clowe already convert a penalty shot with a backhander, Thornton figured he needed to try a different tact. “I was thinking of going to the backhand but Clowe kind of perfected that earlier,” Thornton said.

Devils’ Brodeur shuts out Penguins again (AP)

Martin Brodeur shut out the Pittsburgh Penguins — again. Brodeur made 32 saves for his second straight shutout against Pittsburgh and record 105th overall, leading the Devils to a 2-0 victory Wednesday night. “It was like a playoff game,” Brodeur said. “Guys were going to the net and their were a lot of good scoring chances on both sides.

The Philadelphia Flyers can now hold their heads high in the cold air at Fenway Park. That 2-10-1 skid is quickly becoming a distant memory for the Flyers, who are using a long road trip to rescue what had all the makings of a lost season not long ago. Simon Gagne scored three goals and added an assist, and the Flyers stretched their winning streak to four games by handing the New York Rangers

The Ducks’ lineup has been plagued with injuries all season long, including forwards Teemu Selanne and Joffrey Lupul, and with Ryan Getzlaf being added to that list over the weekend, the game against the Wild was going to be another tough test.

The Nashville Predators held off a late attack by the St. Louis Blues to win a 4-3 game at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Tuesday night. The win broke a three game losing steak for the Preds and added to the Blues‘ home woes, dropping their home record to 6-13-2.

The Chicago Blackhawks leave the ice after an NHL hockey game against the Dallas Stars in Dallas, Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009. Dallas won 5-4.

Steve Ott has failed to cash in several breakaways for the Dallas Stars this season. This time, Ott didn't miss. Ott had two goals, including a tiebreaking power-play tally off a solo rush early in the third period, and the Stars beat Chicago 5-4 on Tuesday night to end the Blackhawks' three-game winning streak.

Even so, Islanders coach Scott Gordon called for Schremp when their game against Columbus went to a shootout, and the 23-year-old responded by scoring the extra session's only goal to give New York a 2-1 win over the Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.
