Sabres Rally to Beat ‘Canes

The Buffalo Sabres rallied to score five goals in the third period, and rookie defenseman Tyler Myers had a three-point night, as they defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 Saturday night at the HSBC Arena.

League-leading Sharks beat Canucks 4-2 (AP)

With all the attention on San Jose's dominant top line, the Sharks got key contributions from lesser-known forwards to beat the Vancouver Canucks. Dan Boyle scored the go-ahead goal on a power play 6:15 into the second period, and Evgeni Nabokov made 28 saves to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 4-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night.

Pittsburgh Penguins left winger Matt Cooke was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL on Sunday for a deliberate check to the head area of New York Rangers center Artem Anisimov on Saturday night. Cooke, also suspended for two games in January, is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The Nashville Predators rebounded from Friday night’s loss against the St. Louis Blues, that ended their seven game win streak. by beating the Florida Panthers 4-1 at the Sommet Center on Saturday night.

Curtis McElhinney’s first NHL shootout was dramatic. So was the comeback it capped off. The Calgary Flames backup goaltender came through with just enough stops to emerge the winner in a wild 4-3 shootout victory last night over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

Avs activate Foote, Hendricks
The Colorado Avalanche activated defenseman Adam Foote and center Matt Hendricks from injured reserve Saturday. To make room on the roster, Colorado placed defenseman Kyle Cumiskey on IR because of a foot injury and waived defenseman Tom Preissing. Foote missed five games after sustaining a jaw injury on Nov. 17 at Calgary. He was placed on IR on Nov. 27, retroactive to Nov. 17. The Avalanche captain has three assists with a plus-6 in 21 games this season.

Niklas Hagman and Phil Kessel each scored two goals to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 6-4 victory over the Florida Panthers on Friday night.

Rolston and Elias lead Devils to 6-1 win

Mike Mottau and Zach Parise had the other New Jersey goals. Parise extended his career-high point scoring streak to 10 games.

Capitals top Canadiens with shootout victory

MONTREAL — Six years after being drafted in the first round, and two years after a mysterious back ailment almost ended his career, Washington Capitals winger Eric Fehr finally is making his impact felt.

Fehr scored his second goal of the game with 11.4 seconds remaining in regulation Saturday night, then Nicklas Backstrom netted the only tally in penalty shots to lift the Capitals to a 4-3 victory at Bell Centre.

Fehr’s goals were his fourth and fifth in the past nine games for Washington, which has gained points in four straight games (2-0-2).

Buffalo Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta was suspended for two games by the NHL on Saturday, a day after his hit on Philadelphia Flyers forward Jared Ross. Kaleta was assessed a major penalty for boarding in Buffalo’s 4-2 victory. Ross didn’t return to the game. Kaleta will miss Buffalo’s game against Carolina on Saturday and Toronto on Monday. He will lose more than $5,400 in pay, with the money going to the Players‘ Emergency Assistance Fund.
