The Ottawa Senators will be happy not to see Ondrej Pavelec anytime soon. The Atlanta Thrashers goalie stopped 50 shots en route to a 3-1 win over the Senators on Saturday. “Right now I feel like Jacque Plante 50 years ago,” said Pavelec, whose helmet flew off after he took a puck to the face.

Ryane Clowe had reason to smile. He finally scored a goal this season and it came at an opportune moment. Evgeni Nabokov made 24 saves, and Clowe and Jamie McGinn scored their first goals of the season to help the San Jose Sharks beat the Western Conference-leading Colorado Avalanche 3-1 on Friday night.

Petr Sykora tried to act as if it wasn't a big deal. Minnesota coach Todd Richards, however, saw a motivated player. Two days after being banished to the press box as a healthy scratch, Sykora had a goal and to help Minnesota win for the first time in regulation this season, 3-2 over the New York Rangers on Friday night.

The two-goal efforts by Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan were hardly a surprise to the Anaheim Ducks. The goals by Mike Brown and enforcer George Parros were a complete shock — especialy because of their timeliness. MSU hangs on to beat Broncos

A last-ditch effort by Western Michigan nearly forced overtime, but MSU hung on and ended the Broncos’ four-game winning streak Friday night in dramatic fashion with a 2-1 victory. James Andersen has the recap.

A Canadian Who . . .

It was Canadian night at Staples Center in LA as the crowd got what a lot of them wanted–a Vancouver Canucks OT victory, and a concert by The Tragically Hip afterwards at Club Nokia, across the street.

In case you feel asleep during last night’s standard Bruins-Devils matchup, the Bruins lost 2-1. They let in two goals that snuck by, or underneath, Tim Thomas’ Vezina stamped goalie pads and were only able to score one themselves (although it was in similar, “ugly”, fashion).

Interim executive director Ian Penny and the NHL Players' Association parted ways on Friday. “Interim executive director Ian Penny informed the NHLPA staff and the NHLPA executive board earlier today that it is his position he has been constructively dismissed … and can no longer work in the present circumstances,” the NHLPA said in a statement.

Ryan Miller and Tim Connolly were at their best with the game on the line for the Buffalo Sabres. Connolly scored on a power play 1:04 into overtime — his second goal of the game — and Miller made 33 saves to help the surging Sabres beat Toronto 3-2 on Friday night. Miller improved to 8-0-1, and the Sabres (8-1-1) won their fourth straight game to match their second-best start after 10 games…


BC wins a wild one over Merrimack

After a wild first period which saw six goals in 20 minutes, the Boston College Eagles had the last laugh as Ben Smith scored the game winner, to give BC the 4-3 victory over the Merrimack Warriors.

Red Wings forward Valtteri Filppula (VALT-Teri FILP-Pu-la) is out indefinitely after breaking his right wrist. Filppula was injured Thursday night in a loss in Edmonton. The Finn has six points this season, tying him for sixth on the team entering Saturday night's game in Calgary.

Pekka Rinne made 22 saves for his first shutout of the season and fifth overall, and Joel Ward scored on a second-period power play in the Nashville Predators‘ 2-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night.

Marian Gaborik returned to Minnesota, but only as a spectator. In his first season with the New York Rangers, Gaborik has 10 goals and eight assists in 12 games. The former franchise player for the Wild is fourth in the NHL with 18 points. Gaborik was scratched and did not dress for the Rangers' only regular-season game against Minnesota because of injury.

Chicago’s Toews misses fourth straight (AP)
Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews missed his fourth straight game because of concussion-like symptoms, sitting out Friday night against Montreal. Toews hasn't resumed skating after a crushing open-ice hit from Vancouver's Willie Mitchell on Oct. 21. Toews is listed as day-to-day. “The progress hasn't been exactly where we wanted it,” Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said.

Dallas Stars goalie Marty Turco has flulike symptoms and will not play against the Florida Panthers. Dallas recalled goaltender Matt Climie from Texas of the AHL before the Stars' home game Friday night against the Panthers. Climie played in five games for the Texas Stars, compiling a 2-1-2 record with a 1.35 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage.
