The Phoenix Coyotes signed veteran center Robert Lang to a one-year contract Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said the 38-year-old Lang “provides another veteran presence for our team and is a proven scorer in the National Hockey League.” Lang has 252 goals and 422 assists in 925 games in his 15-year NHL career along with 18 goals and 27 assists in 87 playoff games.

Mats Sundin is retiring from hockey after nearly 20 seasons in the NHL. Sundin told reporters in Stockholm on Wednesday that he reached the decision this fall. The 38-year-old Swede played for the Vancouver Canucks last season after spending most of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sundin gave special thanks to the Maple Leafs organization and said that “Toronto is and will always be my second home.

With the start of the regular season only days away, Zach Parise and Travis Zajac put a little urgency into their efforts after a poor outing, and it paid off. Parise and Zajac each had a goal and an assist and the New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Islanders 4-2 in the preseason finale for both teams Tuesday night.
