Steve Mason and the Columbus Blue Jackets treated their game against the Edmonton Oilers as a must-win. Mason made 19 saves for his eighth shutout and Raffi Torres scored against his former team, helping the Blue Jackets edge the Oilers 1-0 on Thursday night. “It’s the same situation for (the Oilers),” Mason said.

Witt will begin serving his ban Saturday against Buffalo and will lose more than $74,000 in salary. He can return March 10 at Toronto. Witt hit Hagman at 2:21 of the third period on Thursday night.

Mason made 41 saves for St. Louis, Dallas players hit four posts and a crossbar with shots, and the Blues beat the Stars 3-1 on Thursday night. Mason withstood a 14-shot first period and has allowed four goals in his last four games to improve to 10-3-4 in his past 17 games.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded defenseman Ryan Whitney to the Anaheim Ducks for forward Chris Kunitz and junior prospect Eric Tangradi.

The Pittsburgh Penguins traded defenseman Ryan Whitney to the Anaheim Ducks for forward Chris Kunitz and a junior prospect, less than two seasons into a six-year, $24 million contract that was supposed to make Whitney a key part of the Penguins‘ future. Whitney, who turned 26 last week, missed Wednesday’s night’s 1-0 win against the New York Islanders.

Shootout goals are routine for Jussi Jokinen. Just not as member of the Carolina Hurricanes. The shootout whiz changed that Thursday night, scoring his first since he joined Carolina in a trade with Tampa Bay in early February to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. “Since the lockout, points in the shootout can decide if a team makes the playoffs or not,” Jokinen said.

The New York Rangers picked up forward Mark Bell off re-entry waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday. The rest of his $2.5 million contract will be split between the Rangers and Leafs. Bell, who played in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies this season, will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Martin Biron’s 25th career shutout meant more than reaching a personal milestone. It gave him the edge in the Philadelphia Flyers‘ competition for the No. 1 goalie — for a game, at least. Biron made 34 saves for his second shutout of the season, and Jeff Carter scored his 36th goal in the Flyers‘ 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night.

John Tortorella kept his famous temper in check after a frustrating first game with the New York Rangers. He still made it perfectly clear that the players are going to be taken to task under the new regime. “I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but I’m a little concerned about the conditioning of the club,” Tortorella said after the Rangers‘ 2-1 shootout loss to Toronto on Wednesday night.
